PRRD declares Aug. 21 holiday for Eid’l Adha

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday signed Proclamation No. 556, declaring Aug. 21 as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Adha or the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice.

This year’s Feast of Sacrifice coincides with the death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. that is already listed as a special non-working day.

Aquino was assassinated on Aug. 21, 1983 at the Ninoy Aquino Intenational Airport (then known as the Manila International Airport) upon returning home from a three-year self-exile in the United States.

Republic Act No. 9849 provides that Eid’l Adha shall be observed as a regular holiday.

It was the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos that recommended to declare Aug. 21 as a national holiday in observance of the Feast of Sacrifice.

Eid’l Adha is one of the two major feasts of Islam along with Eid’l Fitr or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. (Jelly Musico/PNA)
