MANILA – President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Monday urged farmers to boost the country’s food security as he led the distribution of certificates of land ownership awards (CLOA) to 1,680 agrarian reform beneficiaries in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.
“To our hardworking farmers, you are no longer just tillers. You are now proud owners of your own land,” Duterte said in his speech.
“I also encourage you to continue your noble duty of tilling our fields and bringing food on the table of every Filipino,” he added.
A total of 4,266.28 hectares of farm land have been distributed, with each beneficiary getting 2.55 hectares.
Duterte said the Philippines will be nothing without the farmers who hurdle difficulties and hardships to ensure food security for over 100 million Filipinos.
The President assured continued government support to farmers through livelihood programs such as crop insurance, production and postharvest trainings, and credit access.
“Credit is where the credit is delivered to you. What’s important is the credit actually among others to boost your productivity and strengthen our agricultural sector as a whole,” he said.
The President lauded the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) for upholding the rights of the farmers “to own, control, secure and cultivate and enhance their agricultural lands”.
“Ever since I have become President, I have not strayed away from my promise to achieve social equity, peace and development for all,” he said.
He called on the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other related agencies to increase farm productivity, reduce farm expenses and promote the well-being of farmers, consumers and the general public through various programs.
“These programs and services are the building blocks of this administration’s agenda to achieve a comfortable and dignified life for all,” Duterte said.
“May this event renew your commitment in enhancing our nation’s food security and uplifting the lives of fellow Filipinos,” he added.
The President was accompanied by DAR Secretary John Castriciones and local officials led by Sultan Kudarat Gov. Pax Mangudadatu and Rep. Suharto Mangudadatu.
Duterte said while the agriculture sector is the weakest link of economy right now, he expressed optimism that the it will be improved as soon as funds from the tax reform program come in beginning next year.
He promised that land reform will continue with or without talks between the government and communist rebels.(PNA)
