PTFoMS lauds arrest of suspect allegedly linked to death of a journalist

By Dean Aubrey Caratiquet

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS), in a statement released Monday,
lauded efforts of local police and military units in Lanao del Norte for apprehending a long-wanted fugitive linked to the tragic killing of journalist Robert Ramos in 2005.

The suspect, known as alias Jalal, was successfully apprehended in Barangay Poblacion, Sapad, Lanao del Norte, under a warrant issued by a Biñan City court in 2006.

This arrest marks a significant step forward in upholding justice for the late Robert Ramos and his family, providing them the resolution they have sought for nearly two decades.

Ramos, a reporter for the regional newspaper Katapat, was fatally shot by motorcycle-riding assailants as he was waiting for a ride home outside a market in Cabuyao, Laguna on Nov. 20, 2005. Authorities allege that the killing was linked to his tip on the trade of pirated DVDs and CDs from a shop in said locale.

Meanwhile, PTFoMS also extends its appreciation for Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief MGEN. Nicolas Torre III and other members of CIDG for the success of collaborative efforts that led to the arrest of the suspect behind Ramos’ murder, calling it vital in ensuring the safety of journalists across the country.

The arrest underlines the task force’s steadfast dedication to investigating acts of violence against media personnel and bringing those responsible to account. PTFoMS remains resolute in its mission to ensure that members of the media can fulfill their roles without fear.
