TACLOBAN CITY, July 7 — A state of calamity has been declared in Kananga town which sustained heavy damage after the 6.5 magnitude quake hit Leyte on Thursday afternoon.
Kananga Mayor Rowena N. Codilla declared the town under state of calamity at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, said Judith Meriam Fontanoza, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer.
Kananga Vice Mayor Elmer Codilla said the local government had PHP2.7 million in calamity funds, which could be used to help quake victims.
Initial reports said one person was died and 37 others were injured after a three-story building collapsed.
Meanwhile, Ormoc City incident command center, as of 8:00 a.m. Friday, has recorded a total of 150 injured people with one dead, identified as a 19-yr-old female from Cabaon-an village here. Some 122 were confined at different hospitals.
Following a brief meeting at the incident command post with Mayor Richard Gomez, Engr. Erwin Magallanes of Energy Development Corp confirmed that the company would lend the city three units of electric generator to be used at the city hall building, and to power water pumps as water services was cut off this morning.
Damage caused by the strong tremor is still being assessed as of Friday morning.
