Release of poll workers’ honoraria now 90% complete in W.Visayas

ILOILO CITY — The Commission on Elections in Western Visayas (Comelec-6) is now 90 percent complete with the distribution of honoraria for thousands of poll workers who served during the recent May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

In a media interview Tuesday, Lawyer Tomas Valera, Assistant Regional Director of Comelec-6, said they are targeting to complete the distribution within the day, although it might not be possible because there are teachers who are attending a seminar in preparation for the opening of classes.

“That is why we cannot distribute them one hundred percent,” he said.

Western Visayas has a total of 29, 131 clustered precincts.

While Valera cannot provide the exact number of poll workers who served during the elections in the region, he said that each clustered precinct has a chairperson of electoral board, members of electoral board, supervisor and support staff.

Under Republic Act 10756, also known as the Election Service Reform Act, poll workers are entitled to the corresponding honoraria; Chairperson of the Electoral Boards, P6,000; Members of Electoral Boards, P5,000; Department of Education Supervisor Official P4,000 and Support Staff P 2,000.

They are also entitled to a travel allowance of PHP 1,000 each.

Valera said these teachers are receiving their honoraria either through cash cards or cash.
He explained that teachers who received their honoraria through cash cards belong to areas with automated teller machines (ATMs) while those without ATM outlets receive their honoraria in cash mode.

He mentioned Caluya, Antique as among the areas whose teachers received their honoraria through cash. (Cindy Ferrer/PNA)
