Roque: ‘There’s likelihood’ of relaxing NCR quarantine; decision still up to IATF

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday (May 27) said there is a possibility of relaxing the quarantine classification in the National Capital Region (NCR) amid an improving COVID-19 situation.

Speaking at his public briefing, Roque said the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) will meet virtually today to discuss the next quarantine classification to be implemented in June.

“There’s likelihood that the quarantine classification might be relaxed on the basis of formula, but subject to the recommendation of the Metro Manila mayors na any further reopening should be gradual,” he said.

“It could be announced by the President himself on the 31st, or it could be announced earlier after maproseso ang mga appeal ng ilang mga LGUs [local government units]. Considering that Monday is the 31st, I prefer that the President will be the one to announce it,” he added.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairperson Benhur Abalos said at the same Palace briefing that NCR mayors have agreed to gradually reopen the economy.

“Isa pang napagkasunduan ng mga alkalde ng Kalakhang Maynila ay suportahan ang negosyo… mga panukala ng DTI [Department of Trade and Industry]… Kamukha ng dati, ang kanilang pananaw ay slowly but surely sa negosyo,” he said.

The mayors also agreed to expand religious gathering capacity up to 50%, pending the approval of the IATF. They also decided to retain the uniform 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. curfew. – Report from Mela Lesmoras/AG-jlo
