‘Rosita’ weakens, but rains to continue over Luzon

MANILA — Typhoon Rosita (international name “Yutu”) weakened further after passing through Northern Luzon but several areas will continue to experience rainy weather despite its exit from the country’s landmass.

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Rosita was last spotted 125 km northwest of Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

Packing maximum sustained winds of up to 125 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of 190 kph, it exited the province of La Union at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The typhoon, moving west northwest at 25 kph, is expected to further weaken into a severe tropical storm as it moves away from the country due to the northeast monsoon.

Tropical cyclone warning Signal No. 3 is raised over Pangasinan and La Union.

Signal No. 2 is hoisted over Abra, Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Kalinga, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas remain under Signal No. 1.

PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said light to moderate rains are expected over Northern, Central and Southern Luzon, including Metro Manila until Wednesday afternoon due to the outer bands of the typhoon.

He said weather will improve in these areas starting Wednesday night.

“Rosita” is now heading towards the West Philippine Sea and is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday afternoon. (Benjamin Nathaniel Bondoc/PNA)
