Sara for senator movement launched in Cebu

CEBU CITY — A movement calling for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for senator in the 2019 elections was launched in Cebu City on Thursday.

Cebu City Councilor Erik Manuel Espina, who initiated the “Inday Sara Duterte for Senator Movement”, spearheaded the launching in his office at Cebu City Hall.

“We, the volunteer officers, coordinators, (and) members of the Inday Sara Duterte for Senator Movement is launching a national campaign in this historic island of Cebu in order to persuade Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to be a candidate for senator of the republic in next year’s election,” Espina formally announced.

The city councilor said the movement aims to gather at least one million signatures from all over the country to convince Mayor Sara to run for the Senate.

The group is open to anyone interested to join the campaign, regardless of party affiliation, he added.

“Anybody can join. Let’s start here in Cebu,” said Espina, who described the presidential daughter as an instrument of peace.

Informed about the movement, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he is inclined to support the signature campaign.

“She’s (Sara) from local government. That’s a big plus. And she’s Bisaya. That’s enough for me. Yes, I will support it,” Osmeña said.

However, the mayor said he will still have to consult with other party leaders of Bando Osmeña – Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) about his decision. (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
