Search and rescue ops for cargo ship crew ongoing – POLO Osaka

The search and rescue operations of the Japanese Coast Guard is in progress for the missing crew of a cargo vessel including Filipinos.

The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Osaka said the Gulf Livestock 1 was sailing in the East China Sea when a “distress signal was received at dawn of September 2 transmitted by a cargo ship sailing 185 kilometers west of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima prefecture.”

It added that the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters reported that Typhoon No. 9 “was approaching the surrounding waters at that time.”

The Panama-registered vessel was carrying 43 crewmembers, including 39 Filipinos, two New Zealanders, one Australian, and one Singaporean. The Filipino Chief Officer named Edward Sareno has already been rescued.

“The Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for other missing crew members using 4 rescue patrol boats, 2 airplanes and divers from the Haneda Airbase Special Rescue Team,” POLO-Osaka said. – PTV News
