Security at airports enhanced for ‘Undas’

MANILA — In time for the observance of “Undas” on Nov. 1 and 2, security at the country’s airports has been enhanced and new equipment have been procured, aviation executives announced at the first “Kapihan sa NAIA” forum on Wednesday.

Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) deputy director-general, Don Mendoza, said his directive was to implement the “Oplan Ligtas Byahe,” or ensure efficient, convenient, and safe travel for air passengers.

“We have identified at least 20 airports, where there has been a huge increase in the number of passengers, especially where there are tourist destinations,” he said, adding that CAAP has also established help desks in these airports.

CAAP manages 86 airports.

The four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), for instance, had a total of 687,892 passengers in 2017. The number, recorded from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2, 2017, includes all arrivals and departures of international and domestic passengers.

Transportation Undersecretary Skee Tamayo said the Department’s “Oplan Undas” will be implemented from Oct. 27 to Nov. 5.

“We always review this (Oplan Undas) to enhance it,” he said.

Tamayo added the passengers’ safety is always considered, not only in the country’s major airports but also in the regional airports.

“We’re enhancing the equipment. There are new x-ray machines. New (units) of explosive tracking device are coming,” he said.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Media Affairs Division head Jess Martinez earlier told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that MIAA is preparing for its “Oplan Undas,” in preparation for the expected influx of passengers this season.

Apart from additional security, Martinez said MIAA will also ensure the presence of medical teams in the four terminals.

“We make sure that the medical people are present. There will be additional security. The management will also ensure that airport facilities like comfort rooms have enough water supply and are working well,” Martinez said. ( Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
