MANILA — The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution congratulating Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao for defeating reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight Champion Keith Thurman at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States to claim the title.

The upper chamber adopted Senate Resolution No. 3, which took into consideration five separate resolutions filed by Senators Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Juan Miguel Zubiri, Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay, and Richard Gordon.

In his resolution, Go said Pacquiao has brought “immense pride and joy to Filipinos the world over with his accomplishments as a boxer”, highlighting the 12 world-titles he has bagged in eight separate weight divisions.

“Senator Manny Pacquiao has, time and again, fought for the pride and welfare of Filipinos in and out of the boxing ring, all the while displaying true grit and bravery, repeatedly taking on the toughest challenges,” Go said.

After the resolution was adopted, Pacquiao thanked his colleagues for the commendation and also urged them to support the passage of the creation of the Philippine Boxing and Combat Sports Commission.

“There are many who say that there won’t be another Manny Pacquiao. But I believe that we have many boxers who are just waiting for an opportunity, waiting for our help,” Pacquiao said.

“It is high time for us to invest in our boxing talents who are loaded with potentials. The so-called diamond in the rough can just be around the corner,” he added.

With the creation of the commission, he said the Philippines could be known as the boxing and combat sports capital of Asia.
