Senate commends Ancajas victory in US title bout

MANILA — The Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution congratulating International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas for his successful title defense against Mexican Israel Gonzales in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Senate Resolution No. 606 was sponsored by Senator Manny Pacquiao, a former eight-division world boxing champion and chair of the Senate Committee on Sports. He said, “Ancajas deserves to be commended for bringing pride and honor to the country.”

In the resolution, Pacquiao lauded Ancajas for “bringing prestige to the country, and for becoming a consistent Filipino boxing champion.”

Ancajas is also the first world champion produced by MP Promotions owned by Pacquiao.

The resolution noted that the Panabo City, Davao del Norte native won against the Mexican contender via technical knock-out in the 10th round of their match, making it his 4th successful defense of the IBF title.

“Ancajas has come out victorious in his last 16 fights, 15 of which are by knockout,” the resolution added.

The 26-year old Filipino champion has a professional boxing record of 29 wins, one loss and one draw, including 20 knockout wins.

“May his victory inspire budding, home-grown athletes to likewise excel in international sporting arenas,” Pacquiao said. (PNA)
