Signal No. 1 up in Batanes, Cagayan, Babuyan Islands due to ‘Emong’

A low pressure area off Eastern Samar has developed into a tropical depression code-named ‘Emong’ on Sunday (July 4), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Based on PAGASA’s weather bulletin of 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, the center of tropical depression Emong was estimated at 700 kilometers (km) east northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar or 790 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar (12.8°N, 131.9°E).

Tropical cyclone wind signal no.1, which may bring 30 to 60 kilometer per hour winds in the next 36 hours, was raised in Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan, Santa Ana, and Gonzaga, including the Babuyan Islands.

The tropical depression is forecast to continue moving northwestward until Monday (July 5) morning.

The country’s fifth storm may also affect Northern Luzon, Central Luzon, and Southern Luzon.

Based on the available data, PAGASA estimates that Emong will leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday (July 7). – Report from Rod Lagusad / CF- jlo
