Singapore orchid hybrid named after Pres. Marcos, First Lady

By Gabriela Baron

Singapore named on Wednesday, Sept. 7, a new orchid hybrid after President Ferdinand R. Marcos and First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos.

The new orchid, named dendrobium Ferdinand Louise Marcos, is a robust and free-flowering orchid hybrid that produces flower sprays of about 50 centimeters (cm) to 70 cm in length.

Marcos and his wife went to the National Orchid Garden during their second day State Visit in Singapore.

Singapore traditionally names orchids after visiting foreign dignitaries as a gesture of goodwill and friendship.

This is Marcos’ State Visit as president since taking office in June. He is expected to meet Singapore President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong late Wednesday.

On Monday, Marcos met with Indonesian President Widodo as two leaders signed four agreements to deepen bilateral ties. –ag
