Sinulog winner to join Pasay festival

CEBU CITY — After winning the Free Interpretation category in the Sinulog 2018 Grand Parade on Sunday, Tribu Kandaya of Daanbantayan, Cebu plans to join the annual Aliwan Festival in Pasay City.

Provincial Board Member Sun Shimura on Monday said his stepfather, Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot, is now eyeing to bring Tribu Kandaya to the said festival in Pasay after their contingent’s victory in this year’s Sinulog Grand Parade.

He added he will file a resolution recognizing the efforts of the contingent and its choreographer in bringing pride and honor to their town.

Shimura said despite the challenges they have encountered during the preparations, Tribu Kandaya was able to pull it off this year, ending the five-year reign of out-of-town contingents in the Sinulog.

As the victory was unexpected, Shimura said it is only proper and fitting to give all the glory to the Sto. Niño.

Governor Hilario Davide III was also happy with Tribu Kandaya’s triumph as well as with Carcar City Division’s victory in the ritual Sinulog-based category.

Davide said they are mulling on giving rewards not just to grand champions Tribu Kandaya and Carcar but to all the participating Cebu municipalities in the Grand Parade on Sunday.

Tribu Kandaya and Carcar each received PHP1 million Monday for their feats.

Other Free Interpretation winners were Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog (Leyte), Catbalogan, Lumad Basakanon, and Tribu Kalivungan of North Cotabato, while Banay Labangon, Talisay City Central School, Municipality of Tuburan, and Panglao, Bohol finished runners-up in the Sinulog-based competition. (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
