Latest data show that approximately 60% of the global population is using social media, and nearly four out 10 internet users worldwide have encountered cybercrime.

In this era of virtual connectivity where villains are also everywhere, it’s important to take part in combating social media misuse and become social media superheroes.

Celebrating “World Social Media Day” or #SMDay is one of the vast opportunities available where we can raise our capes and embrace responsible online behavior.

Did you know? #SMDay was started on June 30, 2010 by Mashable to recognize the essence of social media in global communication, as well as to unite people worldwide to celebrate it.

With these five effective weapons, you can use your social media powers for a positive change:

1. Think before you share

Use your truth-seeking skills to distinguish fact from fiction, and always avoid sharing wrong information and “fake news.”

If you have thoughts on getting facts from sensational headlines, you have to step back first and think twice. Make sure to double check website links and to get accurate information from verified pages only.

2. Unleash a wave of positivity

Spread kindness and compassion in a world where negativity often steals the limelight.

When someone posts a selfie and shares achievements, take a moment to express your appreciation for them. You can also use the power of instant communication to reconnect with old friends and to send them positive messages.

3. Balance is key

Practice mindfulness and moderation to save yourself from the trap of endless scrolling.

Instead of unending scrolling without any idea what to see, practice visiting accounts with a clear purpose. If your target is to check for information posted, focus on it and don’t get distracted by other contents.

Also, clean up your feed by unfollowing unfamiliar or unknown accounts. This approach will reduce endless scrolling and can filter content that can leave a positive impact on your mindset.

4. Be real

Unmask the superhero within you and inspire others with your genuine presence.

Embrace your authentic self on social media by sharing genuine moments, thoughts, and experiences. This will help you form meaningful connections and inspire others.

However, don’t disclose too personal details that can be used against you, including card numbers, addresses, among others.

5. Guard your identity

Protect your privacy to ensure that your digital information remains inaccessible by intruders.

Understand the privacy settings of each platform you use and keep them updated as site policies change over time.

Be mindful also of the information you make publicly available on your profile.

Everyone can reshape social media into a safe and functional platform. Conquer the world and be a responsible digital user! – cf,ag
