Suspect in killing of ex-La Union lawmaker nabbed

AGOO, La Union — The Philippine National Police on Tuesday announced the arrest the suspect in the killing of former La Union (2nd District) Rep. Eufranio Eriguel right after the shooting on May 12.

Police Supt. Marlon Paiste, information officer of the Police Regional Office in Ilocos (PRO-1), in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Tuesday, said the police have also filed a case of three counts of murder against the suspect identified as Felizardo Villanueva.

Villanueva was arrested Saturday night. He is a candidate for barangay chairman in Barangay Capas here but lost.

“Villanueva was arrested based on a recovered cellphone and the statement of witnesses,” Paiste added.

Eriguel, who was reportedly a supporter of Villanueva’s election rival, was shot while speaking before a barangay gathering in Capas. His two civilian bodyguards were also killed and eight civilians were wounded in the incident. (PNA)
