Suspension of AirAsia KL-Davao connection saddens biz leader

DAVAO CITY – The head of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. is saddened by the decision of AirAsia to suspend its four-time weekly Kuala Lumpur–Davao City direct flight effective August 21.

In an interview on Tuesday, DCCCII chairman Arturo Milan said, “We are definitely saddened with the news on the stoppage of the direct link from here to Kuala Lumpur.”

But Milan said he remains grateful of AirAsia, especially to its chairman Tony Fernandes for helping promote Davao’s air connectivity.

“The route is just not able to generate enough passengers and cargoes to make it viable that’s why they have to stop,” he said.

However, Milan said the business sector should continue exploring other viable international destinations for the Davao International Airport.

Davao City tourism head Generose Tecson said she, too, was saddened by the airline’s decision, adding the company could have transitioned into a weekly flight until loading capacity improves.

“Remember ang Silk Air sumugal sa atin 5 years ago and now it has 10 times flight weekly already (Remember Silk Air gambled five years ago and now it has 10 times flight weekly already),” she said. (Digna D. Banzon/PNA)
