Tacloban transforms plaza into Christmas park

TACLOBAN CITY — The city government here has transformed Plaza Rizal into a Christmas Fantasy Park after a huge Cathedral Candy Window Christmas Tree was switched on Thursday night.

Mayor Cristina Romualdez switched on the Christmas tree lights, saying that transforming Rizal Park into a Christmas-themed park aims to entertain city residents.

“We’re doing this every year for everybody, for the families, for the children, for them to have a place to go where they can feel the spirit of Christmas,” Romualdez said.

The cone-shaped Christmas tree, designed by Nick Guarino of Festivali Design and Concept, stands 75 feet tall and is decorated with candy stained-glass pattern and color-changing neon lights. The tree was designed to withstand heat, wind and rain.

Aside from the giant Christmas tree, tiny houses of candy and ginger bread were placed at the roof of Rizal Plaza’s stage depicting a Christmas village.

The fountain at the Park was also transformed into a lotus-shaped gigantic tree.

The park is also adorned with candy classic lantern arcs and white star gates, seven lamp lantern posts, Santa Claus photo-ops board, and a blue vintage Nativity retablo standing near the Rizal Plaza stage.

There is also a bazaar at the Rizal Park where people can buy local delicacies and food. (Roel Amazona/PNA)
