TESDA to give skills training to Itogon landslide survivors

MANILA — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will provide skills training to the survivors of the recent Itogon landslide.

The landslide in an abandoned mining site in Itogon, Benguet happened at the height of Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut). The typhoon made a landfall in Cagayan in the morning of Sept.15 and left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the evening.

“Budget for the two batches of trainees will come from TESDA CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region) and TESDA Benguet,” TESDA Deputy Director General Alvin Feliciano told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Friday afternoon.

But he said the budget amount is yet to be determined, as TESDA is still coordinating with other government agencies on some details.

The training for Itogon survivors, Feliciano said, will be the same as TESDA’s regular programs. But this time, toolkits, or guides for starting up a business, will also be provided, he said.

About 119 evacuees will benefit from the TESDA training, set to be launched on Oct. 24.

They can choose from the following courses: Welding, Driving, Automotive, Cooking/Cookery, Housekeeping and Carpentry, Beauty Care, Baking/Bread and Pastry, Manicure and Pedicure, Slaughtering, Pastry Making, Massage Therapy, Masonry, Free Assessment (NCl/NC ll), Electrical Installation and Maintenance, Machining, Caregiving, Backhoe Operation, Wheel Loader, Haircutting, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Food Servicing, Electronic Servicing, Electronics, Culinary Arts, Computer System Servicing, Bookkeeping, and Automotive Servicing.

There will also be free individual assessments for National Certifications I and II.

According to TESDA, the trainees will also receive allowances. (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
