The Duterte Legacy: Peace and order in the country

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte stood by his promise to lower the crime rate in the country. This was seen during his five years in office where crime volume went down by 64% from 2016 to 2021.

President Duterte also held true to his word in ensuring peace and security for a prosperous nation.

Peace in Mindanao was achieved when the Bangsamoro Organic Law was passed, leading to the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

On July 3, 2020, the President also signed into law the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 or Republic Act No. 11479 (RA 11479). It was intended to prevent, prohibit, and penalize terrorism in the country.

This law effectively replaced the Human Security Act of 2007.

The President also pushed for the modernization of military equipment and weapons to ensure the safety of the people.

There was also an increase in the salary of military and Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel.

In his five years in office, there have been a total of 18,433 rebel returnees under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict’s (NTF-ELCAC) barangay development programs.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security was created under Administrative Order 1 (AO 1) of the President on Oct. 11, 2016.

This agency is tasked with ensuring a safe environment for media workers.

Moreover, the administration’s campaign against drugs resulted in 1,233,195 surrenderers and 22,093 drug-cleared barangays.

They were also able to dismantle 807 drug dens and rescue 3,736 children during anti-drug operations. (PTV News)/PG – bny
