Thousands join EDSA Day job fair in QC

MANILA — At least 1,100 job seekers trooped to the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK) job and business fair in Quezon City on Sunday, in line with the country’s commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

The event offered a total of 16,156 job opportunities, with 4,156 vacancies for local employment and 12,000 for jobs overseas.

“We have 51 participating employers and majority of the jobs being offered are overseas including Australia, New Zealand, Qatar and United Arab Emirates,” said Bureau of Local Employment Director Dominique Tutay in an interview.

As of 3 p.m. Sunday, the labor department recorded a total of 133 applicants hired on the spot (HOTS) for local employment.

“We are happy on the report that there were successful applicants that were HOTS and tomorrow they will report to the offices that hired them. We are happy about that,” she added.

The top 10 vacancies for overseas employment include maintenance filters, fitter general manufacturers, scaffolders, carpenters, production workers/factory workers, waitress/ground stewards, staff nurses, electrical technicians, engineers, salesmen/sales ladies and laborers.

For local employment, the top 10 vacancies are promo staff/specialists, finishing masons, cashiers, merchandisers, sales clerks, pharmaceutical assistants, carwash helpers, sales associate professionals, warehouse staff and tile setters.

During the job fair, the labor department was also able to distribute 23 Integrated Department of Labor and Employment (iDOLE) OFW cards.

OFWs will no longer need to queue in transacting with agencies for their overseas employment as they can now access government services online during the further phases of the iDOLE eServices implementation.

The 2018 EDSA People Power Revolution was observed with the theme “EDSA 2018: Effecting Change Towards Strengthened Democracy”. (PNA)
