Torres shines among Filipino contingent in One’s Yangon event

MANILA — Jomary Torres’ blistering run at One Championship continued on Friday night as she defeated Indonesian opponent Nita Dea at One: Hero’s Dream at the Thuwanna Indoor Stadium in Yangon.

Torres’ striking prowess proved to be enough even as she also turned back Dea at the latter’s own game, getting some successful ground-and-pound opportunities en route to the unanimous decision win.

However, her fellow Filipino fighters failed to pick up from where she left off.

Burn Soriano failed to sustain a scintillating first round as China’s Chen Lei got a second wind in Round 2 and kept him at bay via ground-and-pound, forcing the referee to give Chen the TKO win at the 1:06 mark of the second frame.

On the other hand, Thai fighter Pongsiri Mitsatit’s strikes proved to be too much for Jeremy Miado as the latter verbally conceded at the 4:23 mark of the second round of their clash.

Also, Eugene Toquero’s comeback fight ended in a late first round disaster as Chinese pugilist Ma Hao Bin got an armbar grapple that forced him to tap out with only nine seconds left in the said period.

In the main event, reigning One middleweight champ Aung La N Sang proved that someone from a lighter division can impressively beat a heavier opponent as he submitted heavyweight fighter Alain Ngalani in the first-ever “open weight super fight”.

A guillotine choke with barely 30 seconds left in the first round of the match turned out to be the deciding factor as N Sang scored arguably the biggest win of his career. (PNA)
