TRECE MARTIRES CITY — Unidentified armed men gunned down Vice Mayor Alexander Lubigan of this city and his driver, as they traveled aboard a black Toyota Hi Lux pick up along Trece-Indang Road, Luciano Village Saturday afternoon.

Lubigan, 44, and his driver identified as Romulo Guillemer, 58, of Barangay Conchu, died on the spot when fired upon by armed men also aboard on a black Toyota Hi Lux pick up at about 2:53 p.m. Saturday.

The mayor’s close-in bodyguard, Romeo Edrinal, was also critically wounded and is now undergoing operation at a hospital.

Calabarzon Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Edward E. Carranza said the killing might be politically-motivated and ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting incident.

Lubigan is the third local government official killed in a span of five days in Calabarzon.

On July 2, Tanauan City mayor Antonio C. Halili was gunned down by a still unidentified marksman while gracing the flag-raising ceremony at the Tanauan City Hall grounds.

A day after Halili’s murder, mayor Ferdinand Bote of Gen. Tinio town in Nueva Ecija was also waylaid outside the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Compound in Cabanatuan City. (PNA)
