Trigger Warning: PH suicide cases up by 25.7% amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Latest data of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) show an increase in deaths related to “intentional self-harm” with 3,529 cases. The figure is 25.7% higher than the number of cases recorded in 2019 at 2,808.

According to the agency, “intentional self-harm” climbed to the 27th rank from the previous 31st as the leading cause of deaths in 2020.

Experts say the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is seen as one of the biggest factors that affected people’s mental health. The uncertainty of the situation has caused anxiety spikes to many.

The survey conducted by the OCTA Research group from January 26 to February 1, 2021 showed that 28% of Filipinos experienced emotional problems such as stress and extreme sadness due to the health crisis.

“Geographically, the highest percentage of respondents who experienced emotional problems was observed (among) adult Filipinos residing in (the National Capital Region) NCR (40%),” OCTA said.

Social media advocacy group, #MentalHealthPH, shares simple self-care tips to stay positive amidst the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

Make time to decompress.

Lock yourself away for 30 minutes of quiet time so you can let those stress endorphins settle down. Read a book, listen to music, meditate or simply be, without interruptions or demands.

Keep up familiar routines.
Make it a point to get dressed and ready for the day as if you’re planning to be out and about.

Maintain social connections.
Regular contact with loved ones, even if it’s just by text, phone or video call, can help curb loneliness, reduce boredom and lift your spirits.

Set goals and start chasing them.
Setting goals and working toward them can help you feel more productive and accomplished.
