Troops arrest Abu Sayyaf ‘bandit’ in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY–Joint police and military troops have arrested an alleged Abu Sayyaf bandit in the hinterlands of Basilan province, a police official said Tuesday.

Senior Supt. Rufino Inot, Basilan police director, identified the arrested suspect as Unjie Jammang alias Dams, 50, a resident of Barangay Canibungan, Lantawan town.

Jammang has a PHP600,000 reward for his capture based on the Department of National Defense-Department of Interior and Local Government (DND-DILG) reward list for wanted personalities.

Inot said Jammang, who has standing warrants of arrest for kidnapping and serious illegal detention with ransom, was arrested in an operation around 3 a.m. Tuesday in Barangay Taberlongan, Maluso, Basilan.

He said the warrants stemmed from the suspect’s alleged involvement in the June 2001 Lamitan siege and June 11, 2001 kidnapping of 15 workers at the Golden Harvest Plantation in Barangay Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan. (Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
