Two Currimao dads resign

LAOAG CITY — Two councilors in the town of Currimao, Ilocos Norte have tendered their resignation.

Currimao Vice Mayor Charles Anthony Lazo confirmed this Monday, saying Sangguniang Bayan members Demetrio Quitoriano Sr. and Ricardo Pascua had expressed their intent to resign through separate letters addressed to the presiding officer.

According to Lazo, the second-termer Quitoriano filed his resignation due to his health condition – which he did not elaborate, while Pascua, who is now on his third and final term as a town councilor, noted in the letter he needed to relocate with his family in Manila.

Lazo, however, noted the resignation letters of the two elected local officials have yet to be tackled by the town’s legislative body in its next session.

“This is our first time to encounter such, so we have yet to consult authorities on what is best to do,” Lazo said.

In the out-of-town session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in Currimao town, all members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Currimao, except Quitoriano and Pascua, were present.

An unconfirmed report states the two resigned allegedly due to pressure from the administration of Mayor Gladys Go Que to withdraw a 2016 resolution endorsing an initial 15-hectare reclamation project of the privately-owned Omnico Port in Currimao town, which the local government unit earlier approved.

Last January, Omnico Port applied for a permit with the Currimao government but its application has been pending for almost six months now. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
