Two retarding basins to ease flood woes in Cavite

The issues of flooding in several portions of Cavite may soon be eased with the completion of two retarding basins in Imus.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has opened today (Sept. 23) the two basins in Brgy. Anabu and Brgy. Buhay na Tubig as part of the government’s Build, Build, Build program.

The Imus Retarding Basin in Brgy. Anabu is 35 hectares in size, while the smaller Bacoor basin in Buhay na Tubig is around nine hectares. DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said the project “is first of its kind.”

“Kapag umuulan, may inlet at papasok ang tubig dito. So hindi na babaha, hindi na mag-o-overflow ‘yung ilog. Kapag nag-stop na ang ulan, ilalabas, dahan-dahan ang tubig,” Villar said in a video uploaded on his Facebook page.

Villar said flooding in the areas will be reduced by up to 30%. He said the area can also be converted as an open area outside the rainy season, such as parks, soccer field, or a baseball field.

The Japanese-designed man-made reservoir was established through a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan agreement. The construction of the project started in 2016. – Report from Karen Villanda/AG-rir
