TY Tino reduces speed, maintains strength as it heads towards Sulu Sea, northern Palawan area

In its 5:00 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted a change in Typhoon Tino’s track, as it is expected to make another landfall before continuing towards the West Philippine Sea.

Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) was last located in the vicinity of Patnongon, Antique, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 180 kph, as it moves northwestward at 15 kph.

As it completes traversing Visayas, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 is hoisted over the Calamian and Cuyo Islands, as well as the central and southern portions of Antique, the central and southern portions of Iloilo, and Guimaras.

Signal No. 3 prevails over the northernmost portion of mainland Palawan, the rest of Antique (including Caluya Islands), Aklan, Capiz, the rest of Iloilo, the northern and central portions of Negros Occidental, and the northern portion of Negros Oriental.

The following areas are placed under Signal No. 2: the southwestern portion of Masbate (Balud), the southern portion of Oriental Mindoro, the southern portion of Occidental Mindoro, the southern portion of Romblon, the northern portion of Palawan (including Cagayancillo Islands), Cebu (including Bantayan Islands), the central portion of Negros Oriental, and the rest of Negros Occidental.

Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over the southern portion of Quezon, the southern portion of Marinduque, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, the rest of Occidental Mindoro (including Lubang Island), the rest of Romblon, the rest of Masbate (including Burias and Ticao Islands), the central portion of Palawan, Biliran, the northwestern portion of Leyte, Camotes Islands, the northern and western portions of Bohol, Siquijor, and the rest of Negros Oriental.

PAGASA has also issued a gale warning advisory over the western and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon and the western seaboards of Visayas, noting risky travel for all types of vessels due to very rough seas and high waves in these coastal waters:

  • Up to 6.0 m: The seaboards of northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands; the western and southern seaboards of Occidental Mindoro; the southern seaboard of Oriental Mindoro
  • Up to 5.0 m: The seaboard of Antique; the western seaboard of Aklan
  • Up to 4.5 m: The seaboard of Cagayancillo Islands; the southern seaboard of Iloilo; the western seaboards of Negros Occidental and Guimaras

Rough seas are also expected over the following coastal waters:

  • Up to 4.0 m: The seaboards of Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and Camarines Norte; the northern and eastern seaboard of Polillo Islands; the northern seaboards of Camarines Sur and Catanduanes; the southern seaboard of Romblon; the remaining seaboard of Aklan
  • Up to 3.5 m: The seaboards of Batanes, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur; the eastern seaboards of Catanduanes and Albay
  • Up to 3.0 m: The seaboards of La Union, Zambales, and the Kalayaan Islands; the eastern seaboards of Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, and Davao Oriental; the western seaboards of Pangasinan, Bataan, and the rest of mainland Palawan; the southwestern seaboard of Negros Oriental; the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Samar; and the remaining seaboard of Catanduanes.

Typhoon Tino is expected to emerge at Sulu Sea and is forecast to traverse the northern Palawan area on Wednesday (Nov. 5), before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning (Nov. 6). 

The weather system is likewise forecast to re-intensify and may reach its peak intensity while over the West Philippine Sea.

The state weather bureau, meanwhile, noted the presence of a tropical depression outside PAR, which would be given the name “Uwan.”

As of 2:00 p.m., it was last located 1,910 km east of northeastern Mindanao, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph as it moves west-southwestward at 25 kph.
