LOS BAǸOS, Laguna – To expand teacher knowledge and adopt to changes brought by the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K-12 program, the Mathematics Division of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP) of the University of the Philippines Los Baǹos (UPLB) is holding a 3-day training for secondary mathematics teachers.
The event dubbed “MATHTEX 2018: Teachers’ Training on Algebra” will be held at the UPLB campus from April 21 to 23.
Prof. Lynie B. Dimasuay, chairperson of the Organizing Committee said the event is in line with IMSP’s commitment of developing mathematics in the community where MATHTEX forms part as one of the Institute’s annual public service.
The 3-day intensive training will focus on the most commonly used branch of mathematics – Algebra – where a command of this subject is essential when one needs to understand the other branches of mathematics.
The Institute is targeting mathematics teachers from private and public schools in the Calabarzon provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon as well as the collectively adjacent region of Mimaropa comprised of Mindoro (Occidental and Oriental), Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.
Participants to the training are expected to have mastery on the history of Algebra, the set of real numbers as an ordered field, algebraic expressions, solving algebraic equations and inequalities, and functions and its properties, where a deeper comprehension is necessary to be confident and effective as educators.
University mathematics professors will deliver lectures, and each lecture will be followed by parallel sessions where the participants will be given time to answer exercises under the supervision of equally-knowledgeable and experienced facilitators.
Attendance to the training comes with a fee, and only 100 participants will be accommodated and the organizers have set the deadline for slot reservation on or before Aug 6.
