Volume of vehicles increases in EDSA amid MECQ

The number of vehicles passing through EDSA has almost doubled a week after Metro Manila was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine. Although public transportation remains suspended under MECQ, there are now more authorized persons outside of residence (APOR).

The PNP-HPG has already boosted its mobile patrolling in EDSA to ensure only APORs are on the road.

Based on the data of the MMDA, around 150,000 vehicles pass through EDSA which is considered lesser than the estimated 300,000 vehicles before the declaration of community quarantine.

MMDA EDSA Traffic Head Bong Nebrija said the increase in volume of vehicles under the MECQ is an indication of gradual return to normal of public activities amid the health crisis.

The MMDA has been eyeing the implementation of single bus routes along EDSA and a limit of 600 buses to pass through it. It is also considering the creation of safety protocols on the use of bikes and scooters. – Report from Bea Bernardo
