What’s in a ‘go bag’?

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reminded the public to always equip their households with an emergency preparedness bag or “Go Bag” which should be checked and replenished every three months.

In a Facebook post, the OCD said on Saturday (July 24) that a Go Bag should contain the following:

  • Important documents in waterproof container
  • Flashlight, candles, matches, and whistle
  • Radio with fresh and extra batteries
  • First aid kit with remedies for fever, diarrhea, minor wounds and pain, and maintenance drugs
  • Spare cash including coins
  • Items for special needs of young and older family members
  • Easy-to-serve, ready-to-eat food enough for three days
  • Drinking water in sealed containers
  • Mobile phones, power banks, and chargers
  • Clothing and sanitary supplies
  • Sleeping bags and blankets
  • Ropes, old newspapers, and eco bags made of strong materials

What to do in case of a landslide?

The OCD said it is vital to know the landslide-prone areas, learn the early signs of impending landslides, and know the location of evacuation sites.

Individuals should always protect their heads in case of falling objects. When driving, do not cross bridges and damaged roads.

After a landslide incident, flash floods may occur due to clogging of creeks or rivers.

What to do in case of flooding?

The OCD said the community’s flood early warning and evacuation plans must be known ahead of a disaster. Participating in community flood preparedness actions and drills should also be considered by residents.

To avoid faulty electrical incidents, essential furniture and electrical equipment must be secured in a high area at the upper floor of the house.

The OCD also advised the public not to cross streams when the water level is already above the knees, as such walking or driving through flooded areas is prohibited.
