ZAMBOANGA CITY–The local government has earmarked PHP69 million for the incentive allowance for teachers this year.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said this year’s allocation is higher by PHP22 million compared to last year’s PHP47 million.

Salazar said the increase translates to a PHP1,000 cash allowance for each teacher, which is higher by PHP300 compared to the previous allowance of PHP700.

Salazar said the local government also hired 40 local school board teachers to augment the requirements of the Department of Education (DepEd) this school year.

Salazar also announced that the special education funds for school buildings for this year has increased by PHP66 million — to PHP249 million from PHP183 million last year.

She said 21 climate resilient school buildings, costing some PHP322 million are in various stages of completion in different barangays and are expected to be turned over in time for school year 2018-2019.

Early last week the mayor led the turnover of two infrastructure projects for the education sector here amounting to PHP11.1 million.
