Zamboanga lad wins silver in ASEAN chess tilt

ZAMBOANGA CITY–Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar congratulated a nine-year-old Zamboangueño for bringing honor to this city in the field of sports.

The boy, Art Noblijas of Barangay San Roque here, won a silver medal in the 10-day 19th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships 2018.

“Congratulations and thank you Art and the other members of the Chess team-Zamboanga for bringing honor and pride to Zamboanga City,” Salazar said.

The chess tourney, which was held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City, started on June 18 and ended on Thursday, June 28.

Dr. Cecilia Atilano, city sports development officer, on Thursday said Noblijas is a Grade 4 student at the San Roque Elementary School.

Salazar is expected to present a certificate of recognition to Noblijas on Monday during the flag raising ceremony at City Hall.

Noblijas is also set to receive cash incentive, which the city government gives to local athletes, for excelling in international sports competition. ( Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
