10 PH writers accepted for Asia’s oldest creative writing workshop

DUMAGUETE CITY –  A total of 10 writers from all the Philippines have been accepted as fellows to the 2018 Silliman University National Writers Workshop for this year.

Mark Raygan Garcia, director of the Office of Information and Publications (OIP) of Silliman University here, said Thursday that the workshop, which is the oldest creative writing workshop of its kind in Asia, will be held May 7 to 18 at the Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village in Camp Look-out in Valencia, Negros Oriental, and the SU campus.

Silliman University and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) are behind the 57th edition of the writers’ workshop, he said.

Taking part in the workshop this year are Romaly Ante of Lipa City, Batangas and Catherine Cando of Quezon City, Metro Manila (Poetry in English); Wilfreda Cabusas of Talisay City, Cebu and Herminigildo Sanchez of Catbalogan City, Samar (Balak or Poetry in Binisaya); Sigrid Gayangos of Zamboanga City, Zamboanga and Reil Benedict Obinque of Kiblawan, Davao del Sur (Short Fiction); Jade Baylon of Digos City, Davao del Sur, Rhouneed Ron Kevin Frany of Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija and Joel Donato Ching Jacob of Manila, Metro Manila (Creative Nonfiction); and Manuel Tinio of Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila (One-Act Drama).

The workshop was founded in 1962 by S.E.A. (South East Asia) Write Awardee Edilberto K. Tiempo and National Artist Edith L. Tiempo. (PR/PNA)
