2 airport cops face extortion raps

MANILA– Police on Thursday sued before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office two airport policemen for allegedly extorting money from drivers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 (NAIA 2).

Airport Police 0fficers 1 Pablo Atayde Jr. and Danilo Leviste Jr. underwent inquest proceedings for robbery (extortion) before Pasay City Assistant Prosecutor Rina Alcantara.

Members of the Philippine National Police- Counter Intelligence Task Force (PNP-CITF) presented the two suspects for the inquest proceedings.

CITF spokesman Chief Insp. Jewel Nicanor said the two were arrested Wednesday night in a joint operation by the CITF and the PNP Intelligence Group at the NAIA 2 in an entrapment operation.

The two were reportedly caught red-handed extorting money from drivers picking up passengers in the area. The two are now under the custody of the CITF.

Police launched the operation after receiving numerous complaints through text messages about the illicit activities of the airport policemen.

Meanwhile, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Ed Monreal said the arrest of the two airport cops is an indication of the government’s resolve to put an end to any form of abuse against persons.

“As of now, we are still waiting for MIAA’s copy of the post-operation report to be rendered by the apprehending team of the PNP-Counter Intelligence Task Force (PNP-CITF).

“Meanwhile, I have also ordered MIAA AGM for Security Arnulfo Junio to initiate a parallel probe into the allegation,” Monreal said in a statement Thursday. (PNA)
