Two Filipino restaurants were among the best 50 restaurants in Asia, according to a British magazine.

Toyo Eatery in Manila and Metiz in Makati were both included in the list, at 42nd and 48th spot, respectively.

Run by husband-and-wife team Jordy and May Navarra, Toyo Eatery prioritizes Filipino produce and people, fostering long-term relationships with local farmers and artisans.

Toyo Eatery won the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023 and The Best Restaurant in the Philippines 2023.

“With both à la carte and tasting options, Toyo Eatery presents Filipino ingredients in modern ways, playing with fermentation and preservation techniques to create the boldest flavours,” The World’s 50 Best noted.

Among its signature dishes were 18-vegetable salad, barbecue served three ways, and eggplant omelette.

Meanwhile, Metiz, first opened in 2019, showcases all-local ingredients.

The restaurant features fermented produce and “lesser-known” ingredients.

“There’s also an excellent cocktail menu where the fermentation theme continues, so prepare the palate for bold, funky and bitter flavours,” the magazine noted.

The World’s 50 Best is dedicated to creating a list of best restaurants in the world, based on the advice of multiple experts. -ag
