2 Ilonggo cadets missing in ship razed by fire

ILOILO CITY — Two Ilonggo seafarers went missing after their container ship, Maersk Honam, was razed by fire off Agatti Isles and Lakshwadeep Islands in India on March 6.

This was confirmed in an official statement by Ronald Raymond Lacson Sebastian, chief executive officer (CEO) of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) – Molo campus.

The missing are John Rey Begaso of Barangay Balabago, Jaro this city and Janrey Genvatin of Barangay Cagbang, Oton, Iloilo, both 21 years old and engine cadets from JBLFMU-Molo.

Carl Vincent Chan, another Ilonggo engine cadet on board the ship was also injured.

Sebastian said the Maersk Line has verbally confirmed that only Chan is safe while Begaso and Genovatin are missing.

“The university stands committed to assist the families of these cadets to be in communication with their mother company, Maersk Line, for necessary updates and other pertinent information.

As of this release, JBLFMU is also waiting for the latest update and official statement from Maersk line, Sebastian said.

He also assured that the entire JBLFMU community continues to pray for the safety and eventual return of these cadets to their families.

A news release published on the website of Maersk Line on Thursday stated that the vessel with 27 crew members was positioned about 900 nautical miles southeast of Salalah, Oman, when the fire broke out.

Nine of the 27 crew members are from the Philippines. (PNA)
