Two members of the New People’s Army’s (NPA) underground mass organization (UGMO) have surrendered to police authorities in Paranas town, Samar province on Thursday.

Police Regional Office 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director, PBGEN. Jay Cumigad, who facilitated the surrender, said on Friday the decision to lay down their allegiance to the NPA underscores a growing trust in the government’s commitment to peace and progress in the region.

Police identified the surrenderers as alias “Benben,” 54, a farmer; and “Sammy,” 44, a construction worker. They are both residents of Burong village in Calbiga town, Samar.

The two rebels voluntarily surrendered at the 2nd Samar Provincial Mobile Force Company (2nd SPMFC) in Pabanog village, Paranas.

“The voluntary surrender of these UGMO members before Christmas sends a strong message of hope and renewal. It proves that the government’s presence and dedication to community welfare are being felt and appreciated. This marks a turning point as they embrace a path toward peace and development,” Cumigad stated.

Following their surrender, the individuals underwent debriefing and are currently under the custody of the 2nd SPMFC. The former rebels received cash assistance and grocery items from the police unit.

The Communist Party of the Philippines – NPA established UGMOs inside open sectoral organizations and open alliances to advance and support their armed atrocities and terrorist activities.
