2 weather systems to bring rain showers over Luzon, Visayas

By Ma. Cristina Arayata / Philippine News Agency

The shear line affecting the eastern section of the Visayas and the northeast monsoon affecting Luzon will bring rains across these islands, the weather bureau said on Thursday (Dec. 9).

Scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over Eastern Visayas, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and the northern portions of Cebu and Negros Occidental.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said flooding or landslides are possible during heavy to at times intense rains.

In its advisory issued at 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, PAGASA said that for the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are likely over Eastern Visayas. Light to moderate, with at times heavy rains are also forecast over the rest of the Visayas, Romblon, Masbate, Sorsogon, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao provinces.

Scattered to widespread occurrence of flash floods and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards, PAGASA added.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will cause light rains over Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Aurora, Quezon, and the rest of the Bicol region.

Likewise, it will cause isolated light rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

Mindanao will have isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough seas will prevail over Luzon, the Visayas, and the eastern section of Mindanao.

Strong to gale force winds are forecast over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, western seaboard of northern Luzon, eastern seaboards of southern Luzon, the Visayas and the eastern coast of Sorsogon, western seaboards of the Visayas, and the eastern seaboards of Mindanao and Cuyo Islands.

Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas. (PNA) – jlo
