ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) proved itself successful in creating an “enabling environment that provides holistic training to students” as evidenced by its students winning major prizes in the 2018 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE 2018) competition.

Professor Heinz Gumaquil, University Public Information Officer, in an interview Wednesday, said two of their graduates and a current student are now part of the MADE’s roster of winners.

Noel M. Elicana and Alex P. Ordoyo were grand awardees for the Oil/Acrylic on Canvas Category and for Water Media on Paper, respectively. Roland F. Llarena got a Special Citation for the Oil/Acrylic on Canvas Category.

Elicana’s piece “Kanya-kanyang Tinik, Kanya-kanyang Landas, Iisa ang Ginagalawan” while Ordoyo in his piece titled “Destroyed” won for them the grand prize while Llarena’s “The Diminishing Memories of Home” got him the special citation.

The grand awardees received PHP500,000 financial assistance and a glass trophy designed by Noell El Farol, recipient of the 2009 Metrobank Prize for Achievement in Sculpture award.

“The awards are testimonies for our students that wherever you are, maybe of humble beginnings, you have a chance for as long as you have an interest when it comes to such categories,” Gumaquil said.

He said the awardees came from humble beginnings and “now elevated to the status of an icon when it comes to painting”.

Elicana is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Architecture while Ordoyo took up his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology Major in Architectural Drafting in 2006 and Master of Science in Industrial Education Major in Drafting Technology in 2017 in the same university.

Llarena is currently enrolled as Bachelor of Science in Architecture student.

Last year Architect Paul John Cabanalan, a product of ISAT U, was also a MADE grand awardee.

“This remarkable feat of our students is a source of pride and inspiration not only for the ISAT U community but to all Ilonggos around the globe as well,” said Dr. Raul F. Muyong, university president.

The awardees also became members of the MADE-Network of Winners (MADE-NOW).

The winners received their awards in a ceremony held in Manila in September. (Perla Lena/PNA)
