The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday announced the arrest of three suspects in the theft of fiber optic cables that are part of the No Contact Apprehension Police (NCAP) camera system at the EDSA-Guadalupe footbridge in Makati.

In a statement, MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes commended the “swift action” of the Makati City police.

“Investigation revealed that the suspects returned to the Guadalupe area to steal fiber optic cables again, but failed to notice the patrolling police officers at the overpass. Recovered from them were assorted cut-off electrical wiring and several cutting tools,” he said.

The suspects have undergone inquest proceedings and are currently detained at Makati City Police Station

The theft began on June 20 and was noticed by the MMDA on June 24 after closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras mounted at the EDSA-Guadalupe footbridge began emitting a humming noise and were disconnected.

The stolen cable wires, with an estimated value of P104,000, were allegedly sold to junk shops.

“The MMDA will directly coordinate with the Philippine National Police-National Capital Region Police Office (PNP-NCRPO) to ensure that the incident will not happen again,” he said.
