3,000 workers in Antique get regular status

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — The strong campaign of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to end contractualization has benefited some 3,000 workers in Antique.

DOLE Antique Director Melisa Navarra on Wednesday said that workers were voluntarily regularized by the Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) based on Semirara Island of the town of Caluya.

She added that the 3,000 workers in Antique are part of the more than 4,000 workers, who were regularized during the first quarter of 2018 in Western Visayas.

“The 3,000 regularized workers of the SMPC are those directly working in the mining company but formerly through a contractor only,” she said.

Navarra added that they also gathered 50 representatives of 50 establishments in an orientation on labor laws and end of contractualization last March 15.

DOLE inspectors are in the process of validating and following up establishment owners this month.

“So far since the implementation of the end of contractualization, we have not yet issued draft order to those engaging in labor-only contracting,” Navarra said. (PNA)
