Comelec exec stresses need for rules on campaign giveaways

MANILA — It is time for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to come up with rules on the use of campaign materials.

Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon made this remark on Thursday as she expressed dismay over the distribution by an aspirant in this year’s mid-term elections of female undergarments with his name printed on it.

“We should have a rule on what materials are prohibited. Those that are obscene or show women as sex objects,” she said in her Twitter account, @commguanzon.

The photo which went viral on social media showed a panty bearing the name of Quezon City Councilor Ramon “Toto” Medalla.

“This one really overdid it,” she said.

On the other hand, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez questioned the local political aspirant for using such item as a giveaway.

“Well, hell. That’s not exactly what politicians want to be known for, is it?” the poll body official said in his Twitter account, @jabjimenez.

Medalla is seeking another term as councilor in the city’s second district.
