ILOILO CITY — The Miss Iloilo Dinagyang (MID) brings back Iloilo City’s glorious years as it plays host to the Kahirup traditional charity ball at the historic Molo Mansion on Saturday night.
Kahirup is an Ilonggo word that means endearment, gentleness, hospitality and camaraderie, PJ Arañador, executive director of the MID, said.
“When the Spaniards left Iloilo, the affluent society gathered to party in their fineries, Iloilo as the textile capital of the Philippines,” he added.
Miss Dinagyang candidates will be wearing haute couture gowns designed and made by local creators during the Pasarela show (fashion show), Arañador said, adding that 30 senior and junior designers will be showcasing their gowns.
He added that to complement the occasion, he has invited local chefs to prepare the food for the guests.
“Iloilo is supposed to be elite, not just a barangay level presentation. It is high class because that is the image of Iloilo,” Arañador said.
The MID is not charging an entrance fee. Instead, guests are expected to donate starting at PHP300. The proceeds will be used to help vulnerable communities, women and children.
The charity ball is one of the major events of the MID prior to its coronation night on January 25.
Arañador said that the coronation for the first time will be held in a public place but similar to the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.
“Iloilo is always a pioneer. It always innovates and has a sense of modernity,” he said.
The coronation will highlight the Ilonggo culture as it will showcase native songs and dances.
In the end, five ladies will get the crowns on industry, tourism, heritage, environment and as the carnival queen.
Arañador succeeded the late Alex Soncio as chair of the MID committee. He shared that while he experiences “birthing pains,” he is hoping to really deliver.
“I have this desire to re-invent and I would like to really showcase the Ilonggo culture,” he said, adding that his commitment and love for Iloilo are the foremost reasons why he accepted the task.
