11th Kidapawan Open Chess Championship set next month

DAVAO CITY — Kidapawan City will host the 11th Open Chess Championship next month with bigger prizes up for grabs.

To be held on Feb. 24 and 25 at the Kidapawan Convention Center, the tournament has a total of PHP95,000 cash prizes at stake.

The champion will earn PHP25,000 plus a trophy while the 1st runner-up will get PHP20,000, 2nd runner-up PHP15,000, 3rd runner-up PHP10,000, 4th runner-up PHP7,000, 5th runner-up PHP5,000, 6th runner-up PHP4,000, 7th runner-up PHP3,000, 8th runner-up PHP2,000, and 9th runner-up PHP1,000.

Dr. Ed Calica, head of the Kidapawan Chess Club, said on Sunday that the best ladies, junior and kiddies’ player will be awarded PHP1,000 each.

The tournament is organized by the club in partnership with Batch 85-Notre Dame of Kidapawan Boys and Girls HS Alumni Association.

Calica said it is also sponsored by the Kidapawan City government and Mayor Joseph Evangelista, and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
