MANILA — Members of the Quezon City Council on Friday reminded all local and national candidates running in the May 13 mid-term elections to observe the ordinance that prohibits the use of plastics as advertisement and propaganda materials within the city.
Ordinance No. SP-2202 prohibits the use of polyethylene, or plastics, as advertisement and propaganda materials in Quezon City as the city’s initiative to reduce wastes and encourage candidates to utilize environmentally-sound methods.
The ordinance penalizes violators with a notice of violation for the first offense; a PHP3,000 fine and three-day community service for second offense; and a PHP5,000 fine and a three-day community service for third offense.
Any firm or corporation caught selling, transporting or in possession of propaganda materials for use or installation in Quezon City will be fined PHP3,000 up to PHP5,000 and revocation of mayor’s permit to operate.
Meanwhile, Councilors Victor Ferrer Jr., Eufemio Lagumbay, Ranulfo Ludovica, Allan Francisco, and Allan Benedict Reyes called on the city government to remove illegally placed propaganda materials, such as those posted on electric wires and cables, regardless of their political parties and affiliations.
The Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department, Park Development and Administration Department, Department of Public Order and Safety, and the Quezon City Police District have been tasked to remove and confiscate these campaign materials.
At the same time, the City Council asked candidates to be responsible and only place their advertisements in designated poster areas.
