Cebu City schools warned vs collecting graduation fees

CEBU CITY – City Councilor Joy Augustus Young on Thursday advised all public schools not to collect graduation contributions from parents of graduating elementary and junior high school students in the city.

Young, who sits as deputy mayor for education, made his appeal to public school officials after receiving reports that some parents have been complaining about the collection of graduation fee by some schools.

He said public schools should not collect graduation fees or contributions because the city government has already allocated more than PHP3 million for the graduation expenses of students in the metropolis.

“We have allocated PHP150 for each graduating student in the city, so there’s no need for schools to collect contributions,” Young said in an interview.

The Department of Education (DepEd) also prohibits public schools from collecting contributions intended for the graduation exercises or programs of students.

Commencement exercises of the different public schools in Cebu City are mostly scheduled on the last week of March until the first week of April.

“I am appealing to public school principals to please do not collect contributions as the graduation expenses of the graduating class are being shouldered by City Hall,” Young said.
