DAVAO CITY — The City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) will further intensify the campaign on responsible pet ownership as the local government commits to support government’s campaign for a “pet-friendly Philippines and rabies-free country.”

City Veterinarian Grace Pallar said that CVO catches 22 to 30 stray dogs per day, as the city’s high rabies cases prompted them to strengthen their vaccination campaign.

“This is alarming,” Pallar said during the Kapihan sa Dabaw at SM City Annex on Monday.

Pallar said CVO has also conducted a consultation with barangay officials to help advocate responsible pet ownership and educate villagers about the danger of rabies.

Floyed Bascones, the Director of Pawsitivity, said their group is committed to back government efforts to bring down the number of dangerous animal bites in the city.

Bascones said acknowledged the need to intensify the campaign on responsible pet ownership to reduce the population of stray animals in the city.

Pallar said that, last year, Barangay Catalunan Grande registered the highest rabies cases with 27 tested positive cases.

Meanwhile, the city government is putting up a P5-million pet crematorium –the first in the country. It will be constructed at the Malagos site in Baguio District where the city will also move the City Pound, she said.
