CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Dragon boat teams from Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities captured the coveted championship titles in two categories at the second Panagsangka sa Banawa and 6th Bugsay Mindanao Paddle for Peace, held in Cortes, Surigao del Sur, on Sunday (March 17).

Iligan’s Bakunawa claimed the 2000-meter standard open category, finishing 11 minutes and 25 seconds; another team from that city, Baku Uno, placed second by finishing at 11 minutes and 30 seconds.

Cagayan de Oro’s Brave Heart Dragon Boat Team bagged the 200-meter mix category, besting others with finishing time one minute and three seconds, and 24 milliseconds.

The composite team of Liceo de Cagayan University dragon boat alumni, students from Cagayan de Oro College-Phinma, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, and newly formed Cagayan de Oro-based Rapid Riders, also placed third in the 2000-meter mix category.

Another group from the Cagayan de Oro, the CGY Oro Dragons, got the 5th spot as Minor B Champions in 200-meter mix category, with a finishing time of a minute, three seconds, and 73 milliseconds. The team, meanwhile, finished second in 200-meter Small Boat Women Category, as it lost to Kujaw Tiger Dragon A — the host municipality’s homegrown team.

Davao City’s Dragon Warriors Davao also made a feat for winning two championships for the 200-meter and 2000-meter open standard boat categories.

The event was organized by the local government of Cortes and Bugsay Pilipinas. The boats used in the race are provided by Dragon Boat Kagay-an, Inc.
